We travelled to several of the ancient sites in Peru – but we were continually moving, and there was no time to pause for sketching. However, we visited Isla del Sol (Island of the Sun) on Lake Titicaca, and getting up at sunrise while most of our group was still asleep, I found time to sketch this view of the lake. (But the colour was added later…)
If the jetty looks a bit ramshackle, that’s because it was… yes, that is a pretty accurate depiction!
San Francisco Cathedral, La Paz
Arriving in La Paz, our journey came to an end. And I had a full glorious day to just wander around and draw…
One postable image is not much, but it’s all I’ve got. Travel weary and overwhelmed, I sat in the square just over from my hotel and sketched the facade of the San Francisco cathedral in the late afternoon light, and returned next morning to finish it and add colour.
The light was all changed, of course… and I think I prefer the afternoon version, which gave softer shadows. But anyway, this is the result:
It’s too large a subject for a 6″ X 6″ sketchbook, which is what I was using as my main travel journal. But I did capture the lovely pink colour of the stone…
